Deaf Culture Awareness Workshop

This Deaf awareness workshop will provide a deeper look into the Deaf life; you will learn about the different identities of Deaf and how to get the attention of a Deaf person. You will leave with an awareness on how to be a better ally for the Deaf community

Congratulations, you have learned ASL, now what?

Join us for a Deaf Culture Workshop!!

It’s more than just learning the language of ASL, you need to understand the culture with your heart. Your reception and understanding of visual behaviors is vital to total communication. We’ll show you how to see the world through Deaf eyes and interact with Deaf community.

Your goal is to get in the habit of using your eyes mindfully and proactively. You will learn about how to be in a hearing environment and still respect Deaf culture. People are likely to automatically respond when hearing a sound and immediately look away, or to talk with somebody else who is attempting to talk with the hearing person all the while interrupting the conversation with the Deaf. Did you know these are hearing privileges?

Workshop will be 1 hour presentation with a 10 minute break and then followed by games and activities to reinforce what you learned.

This workshop will be presented in ASL, no voice. In order for your to understand, It is recommend that you have completed at least level 2 of ASL with Visually Speaking or at another institution.
